Dr Brookshaw graduated in 1996 and then accepted an oral surgery position at Leicester Royal Infirmary. This was followed by 2 years as a senior house officer in the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department at Sheffield University where he was involved in oral surgery and implant dentistry.
In 1999 he completed his Masters Degree in Oral Surgery at Sheffield University and the Implant Research Department at Chieti University, Italy. He then returned to general practice where he completed the Sheffield University Nobel Biocare 18 month implant training programme.
Dr Brookshaw teaches the surgical parts of the st.ann's dental’s Implantology course and undertakes procedures including implant surgery, soft and hard tissue augmentation (bone grafting and microsurgical connective tissue grafting techniques), sinus lifts/grafting and all aspects of oral surgery. He is extremely passionate about this field and continues to receive additional advanced training from leaders in implant dentistry worldwide including the USA, France, Italy, Belgium and the UK.
Dr Brookshaw was also one of the first dentists in the UK to be trained using the new key hole surgery techniques with Nobel guide. Nobel guide allows the placing of implant, abutment and restorative crown to happen simultaneously after performing virtual surgery on the computer via a new interactive software programme. The benefits to the patient are no sutures or cutting flaps, keyhole surgery and improved healing and offer immediate function (chewing) on the new teeth. Conventionally this would take three visits.
Throughout the last three years Dr Brookshaw has placed over 1500 implants and had a 95.5% success rate.
Dr Brookshaw is also fully trained in medico-legal report writing and is a member of the European Association of Osseointegration and the Academy of Osseointegration.
"I
was extremely nervous about having two implants in my lower denture
to secure it; however a good rapport between Richard and I soon
developed and I now only wish I had done this sooner. Richard constantly
reassured me before, during and after treatment, and he certainly
gave me all the confidence I needed – I can thoroughly recommend
him to care for you." Mrs
